Luckily every version of the A3 provides good acceleration thanks to a 2. Look for 30 mpg in mixed driving while using regular unleaded. With an all-new model imminent, Audi has trimmed the A3 sedan range and added even more equipment for the model year. What remains is as good as ever before: a punchy turbocharged engine in two states of tune, a smartly designed interior, and utterly balanced dynamics.

Downsides are few but are worth noting - the A3's dimensions mean that both cargo capacity and passenger room are limited. The new Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan has also leapfrogged the A3 in terms of design and interior tech. Still, the current A3 remains one of the classiest options in this segment and can bow out with its head held high.

Audi has rejigged the A3 sedan line-up by removing the entry-level and fully-loaded trims - Titanium and Prestige, respectively - while beefing up the standard equipment on the Premium and Premium Plus mid-range trims. The new Audi A3 Premium trim now gets you inch wheels with all-season tires, Black optic exterior trim, Audi drive select, Audi advanced key, a color driver information system, stylish Aluminum Mistral inlays, and a vehicle immobilizer with an anti-theft alarm and motion sensor.

Available on both trims is a new Final Edition package as a last hurrah to this generation of the A3. It adds front leather seats in either Black or Magma Red with contrast stitching, Audi Beam ring for the door puddle lights, and a sportier steering wheel with a flat bottom, shift paddles, and a three-spoke design. The previous A3 sedan quattro is now designated as the A3 S line quattro and it gets an S line exterior kit, aluminum door sills with S rhombus, and inch five-spoke wheels.

Quantum Gray, a new color option, is available on every A3. Typically clean lines have seen the A3 sedan age remarkably well - it still looks classy and modern from any angle. The Premium trim gets larger inch wheels forand these do a better job of filling out the arches than the inch wheels used previously. The more aggressive Black Optic exterior trim has also been added to the Premium trim. LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, and a panoramic sunroof are standard across the range, while the Premium Plus also gets full LED headlights and the S line exterior appearance - the latter features unique front and rear bumpers, body-colored side sills, and S line fender badges.

The A3 S line quattro additionally has aluminum door sills with S rhombus, plus unique inch five-arm-trapezoid design wheels. The A3 sedan's compact size has both its advantages nimble dynamics and a purposeful stance and disadvantages tight interior space. Even so, the A3 is showing its age as more modern rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz A-class are coming to market with more modern styling and features; we expect the model year to be the last for this generation of the A3.

Front-wheel-drive A3 models now carry the Sport moniker, while Quattro all-wheel-drive models are badged as S Line. Both models are powered by a turbocharged 2. Premium models now come with inch wheels, a driver-selectable driving-mode system, keyless entry with push-button start, ambient interior lighting, a color driver-information screen between the gauges, new aluminum trim, and black exterior trim. Audi has introduced the Final Edition package—which leads us to believe that this generation A3 is nearing the end of the road—which adds leather sport bucket seats, puddle lights that project the Audi logo on the ground outside the front doors when they are opened, and a flat-bottomed steering wheel with shift paddles.

The drop-top A3 cabriolet is dead. We think the front-wheel-drive Sport Premium Plus model strikes the best balance of performance and features. Sure, its hp four-cylinder isn't as powerful as the one in the S Line model, but it's more fuel efficient and still plenty peppy.

Going all out for the top-of-the-line S Line Premium Plus puts the A3's price too close to the larger and more modern A4 sedan. The A3's turbocharged 2. The higher-powered version rocketed an all-wheel-drive A3 sedan from zero to 60 mph in 5.

Front-wheel-drive Sport models are the most fuel efficient A3s with ratings of 27 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. Adding all-wheel drive to the mix drops those estimates to 22, 30, and 25 mpg respectively. We'd wager these estimates are conservative, though, since an all-wheel-drive model delivered 34 mpg on our mile highway fuel-economy test route.

Inside, the A3's cabin is as stylish and as well-assembled as its larger Audi siblings, but interior passenger space is tight, even by compact-car standards. Even though it's smaller and older than the larger A4 and A6 sedans, you don't feel shortchanged for luxury inside the A3's cabin.

The spunky little sedan blends influence from Audi's sports cars—the TT and the R8 —with prominent round air vents on the dashboard and an optional digital gauge display. The A3's trunk is roomy enough—we fit five carry-on suitcases in there—and the rear seats fold down to accommodate bulkier items. Finding places to fit smaller items throughout the cabin is more challenging, especially in the A3's center console, which is short on storage space.

Innovative technology is featured heavily; all models come with a 7. Audi offers plenty of driver-assistance featuresalthough most are extra-cost options. Though its diminutive size meant it wasn't really suitable for four tall adults, the A3 impressed us with its excellent materials quality, rapid acceleration and sublime comfort.

While the A3 continues to be an excellent choice, it certainly feels less special than before. Volkswagen's luxury arm is looking to turn the tide with the upcoming Audi A3. Additional creases on the bodywork sharpen the A3's appearance, while silver blades in the faux air inlets and a slight gap between bumper and hood recall the larger Audi A4. The biggest change is to the A3's interior, which features a driver-focused design and high-tech feel.

It also employs extreme angles throughout. Though we don't think the cabin will be universally beloved, its daring and distinctive design is unique for such a budget-friendly small car. Other markets will get turbocharged 1. We don't know exact specifications yet, but Audi says it will produce more power and torque than the current A3 engine, which offers horsepower and lb-ft of torque. While the exterior styling is just slightly massaged, the cabin is a different story entirely. Other than a generally driver-focused layout, the interior looks like nothing else in the Volkswagen portfolio. Though many luxury cars experiment with organic forms with long, sweeping curves, the A3's cockpit appears to have been designed with a straight edge. Sharp acute angles decorate the door panels, while the center-console surround mimics the A3's front grille. A pair of driver-facing air vents flank the instrument binnacle, clearing up space on the center stack for climate controls.

There are two air vents in front of the passenger, with an aluminum throughline that gives the impression of one large vent. Since the A3's wheelbase hasn't changed, we don't expect the rear seat to be any more accommodating than the current model. Look for a cabin that is fairly spacious for tall passengers up front, with a rear seat best reserved for shorter occupants or children.

Audi hasn't confirmed whether the cloth upholstery shown in these pictures will be available for U. The current A3 is one of the only Audis still using a display screen interface controlled by a knob and buttons.

That will change for the A3, which will adopt a touchscreen like all of the newest Audis. The The navigation system also has the ability to predict traffic to your destination based on previously collected data, so your ETA can be calculated with even greater accuracy.

Some systems are enhanced for — adaptive cruise control now includes a lane-centering feature, and the blind-spot monitor stays active after parking to warn you if you're about to open your door into approaching traffic.

The current Audi A3 is an exceptional small sedan, but it doesn't feel quite as luxurious as the Mercedes A-Class.
